While
the women were 'busy' selling their goods in the street, the men settled

The nomadic Spanish gypsies, gitanos, are a separate ethnic group, and there's a large contingent of gypsies in Mallorca. | |

Gitano street markets are picturesque like in Pamla on my first visit to Mallorca back in 1964. The gypsies/gitanos originated in the
Punjab/India, and fled during clashes between invading Arabs and
Mongols a thousand years ago. On their long journey, they
travelled the Middle East. They became so closely associated with Egypt
that they eventually came to believe that they were descendants of the
Pharaohs, a legend to which many of their songs still refer - as a
result of which they were called Egyptians, or "Gypcians" in English;
while, in old Spanish, gitano was simply a way of saying "Egyptian".
Having no written history, they had forgotten where they really came
from. |
