Danish West Indies

King Christian X

The Danish West-Indies in the Caribbean were sold to the United States of America in 1917 after having carried the Danish flag for 250 years. The islands are now known as the US Virgin Islands. These postcards are from before Denmark sold the islands.

You still find a lot of Danish names and street names on these islands, and a few still know the Danish language.

The Danish National Archives' website gives you a thorough run through the history of the Danish West Indies, 1671-1917.

The Danish West Indies consisted of the Caribbean islands St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. The colony was sold to the United States in 1917, since which time the three islands have been known as the United States Virgin Islands.

A Danish police-soldier in the Danish West Indies in the 1910s. As a friend he wrote my father in 1910 and enclosed this photo. Not a postcard.
